Following a dismal 20-50 football record in more than five seasons, the University of Idaho announced Sunday that it had fired Vandal head football coach Robb Akey.

"This is the right move at this time," said U of I Athletic Director Rob Spear in a statement. "[President Duane Nellis] and I believe it is important to make this move now so we can immediately begin the process of hiring a new coach for the 2013 season."

Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Jason Gesser will serve as interim coach.

The Vandals are 1-7 thus far this season and have four remaining games: San Jose State on Saturday, Nov. 3, in Moscow, Brigham Young University on Saturday, Nov. 10, in Provo, the University of Texas at San Antonio on Saturday, Nov. 17, in Moscow, and Utah State University on Saturday, Nov. 24, in Logan.

The University of Idaho is obligated to pay Akey his base salary of $165,796 until his contract expires in December 2014. If he is hired elsewhere, the U of I must pay the difference between his annual base in Idaho and his new salary.
