Press-Tribune: Like Water for Chocolate Remains on Nampa School Shelves

While the Nampa School Board has pulled Like Water for Chocolate from the Nampa High School sophomore English reading list, the book is still on the shelf at the school's library.

This morning's Idaho Press-Tribune reports that trustees with the Nampa School District removed the novel from the school's curriculum Sept. 24 after one of the trustees received 15 emails complaining that Like Water for Chocolate was too steamy.

One of the school's English teachers told the Press-Tribune that students and parents were initially cautioned about some of the book's provocative passages and were given reading guides if they chose to skip those parts of the book.

"The claims that students were forced to read it are simply false," said sophomore English teacher Bonnie Richardson.
