Faced with a nearly $500,000 deficit and the possibility of shipping Idaho juvenile offenders across the border, officials in north-central Idaho have decided to cough up enough cash to keep the doors open at the Region II Juvenile Detention Center in Lewiston.
In August, Citydesk first told you about Nez Perce County's dilemma of operating the juvenile detention facility under a $1 million budget instead of a plan in which it would pay operators at Washington's Martin Hall $301,000 to house the offenders. The Nez Perce facility houses juvenile offenders from Clearwater, Idaho, Latah, Lewis and Nez Perce counties.
The Lewiston Tribune reports that the each of the counties has agreed to help cure the shortfall. The state of Idaho continues to pay $100 per day for each of the offenders staying at the Nez Perce facility.
