Get-out-the-vote campaigns have taken place in the United States since the country's first elections. But Tuesday, Sept. 25, that initiative becomes a national effort.
Across the country, scores of eligible voters are expected to register during the inaugural National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday. The nonpartisan campaign is a coordinated effort to reach out to unregistered voters through community events in public places, from bars to college campuses and coffee shops.
Celebrities including Dave Matthews and Stephen Colbert joined HeadCount.org to promote the event online, according to Rolling Stone. Throughout the day Tuesday, the artists will post their photos on Facebook with a link to an online voter registration form.
Twitter users will broadcast their involvement with the effort using the "#925NVRD" hashtag.
The Treasure Valley’s voter registration effort will take place at the Boise State University campus. The Idaho Civic Engagement Project and the Associated Students of Boise State University have organized more than 20 volunteers to help the community and students register.
According to the 2010 census, 6 million Americans did not vote in the 2008 election because they missed a registration deadline or did not know how to register.
Armed with clipboards and voter registration cards, volunteers will be stationed around campus, including the university's quad, near student dormitories and near the University Drive College of Engineering buildings. Forms will include appropriate registration forms for citizens from any state.
"I would love to register as many as 500 students," said ICEP director Emily Walton.
Additionally, the ASBSU sent out an email about registering to vote to almost 20,000 Boise State students today.
ASBSU and ICEP officials reached out to Boise Mayor Dave Bieter, who issued a proclamation naming Sept. 25 Voter Registration Day in Boise.
Additionally, Idaho Secretary of State Ben Ysursa joined fellow members of the National Association of Secretaries of State to proclam September National Voter Registration Month.
Volunteers will also head to the downtown bar Neurolux Tuesday evening to help patrons register. The group plans to attend events through Idaho's registration deadline—Oct. 12.
