With more than 40 percent of the blaze contained, fire managers reported good progress Thursday at the 440-acre Karney Fire in Boise County. More than 340 firefighting personnel remain on the scene.
Residents of the Robie Creek and Wilderness Ranch subdivisions remain under a voluntary evacuation and access to the fire area is restricted to local property owners only.
The fire, burning about 10 air miles northeast of Boise, began Monday in scattered timber and brush. Boise County Sheriff's deputies arrested 18-year-old Nathaniel Bartholomew and charged him with starting the fire. Bartholomew was a volunteer firefighter, and law enforcement told Citydesk they had reason to believe that he started the blaze "to get a relative's attention." Bartholomew's father is also a firefighter.
