When Boise Weekly spoke with Rebecca Hupp in May, just a few weeks after she began her new post as director of the Boise airport, she knew exactly what challenges lay ahead: maintain existing air service in and out of the Treasure Valley while working to lure airlines to add or grow service to new destinations.
"For example, we're only going to ask them for something that fits into their business model. We're not going to get Delta to fly from Boise to Philadelphia, which is not one of their hub cities," said Hupp. "You really need to know the airlines' structure and what makes sense for them. You need to ask for something that fits."
This coming Tuesday, the Boise City Council will consider Hupp's request to attend three conferences, two in September and another in October, where she'll get some face time with airline executives in sessions slated for Dallas, New Orleans and Park City, Utah.
"When I meet with the airlines, it's usually not my first experience or encounter," she said in May. "But these meetings are the beginning of a conversation, not the end."
One airline has already committed to new service: Allegiant will be flying out of Boise to Las Vegas beginning Friday, Oct. 26, and to Honolulu on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013.
