UPDATE: Prosecutors Say Homedale Woman Burned Body of Toddler in a Barrel

UPDATE: 4 p.m.

Owyhee County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 29-year-old Veronica Herrera in connection with the death of her 2-year-old daughter. Herrera is charged with felony destruction of evidence and faces further charges.

Prosecutors said Herrera burned the body of her daughter in a barrel last week. Investigators said Herrera admitted to burning the body, fearing that a felony investigation would soon discover the girl's disappearance.

Police said Herrera told them that her daughter had died due to a head injury and she burned the body of the toddler because she didn't want to lose custody of her other children.

Idaho State Police are helping Homedale Police investigate what is being called "a suspicious death" of a child.

No charges have been filed, but an Owyhee County prosecutor told KTVB Sunday night that investigators are looking into allegations that a mother killed her child and possibly burned the remains at a Washington Avenue home.

"It's a suspicious death investigation," Sgt. Mike McFetridge of the Homedale Police Department told KTVB . "Currently, at this time, we can't release information because of the sensitivity."

Law enforcement stressed that there was "no present danger for the community."
