A Star woman was arraigned Aug. 17 and ordered to be held on a $1 million bond in connection with a June 16 traffic crash that killed a 5-year-old boy.
Helen Burgess, 42, faces a felony charge of vehicular manslaughter and aggravated driving under the influence. It wasn't Burgess' first driving-related charges. In 2009, she admitted to DUI, and in 2011, she admitted to inattentive driving. In previous sentences, she was ordered to attend drug and substance abuse classes and to attend a victims' impact panel.
Prosecutors allege that Burgess' car slammed into the back of a van that was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Highway 44 and Highway 16.
Burgess has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Friday, Aug. 31.
