Christopher Card, an eye doctor from Caldwell, pleaded guilty to defrauding Medicare with fraudulent bills adding up to more than $1 million, which he began signing as early as 1993.
At the U.S. District Court in Boise on Friday, Card was spared from the maximum sentence in exchange for the plea agreement. Court papers show that Card gave his patients fake diagnoses for serious health conditions like glaucoma, then billed Medicaid for expensive tests that he never administered.
Restitution is set at $1 million.
In November of 2011, Canyon County physician Dr. Michael Applebaum was charged with writing fraudulent progress notes for individual psychotherapy sessions. He was also charged with altering documents before they were submitted to the Idaho State Attorney General's Office during the resulting investigation.
