A new study commissioned by the Greater Boise Auditorium District and authored by Dr. Don Holley and John Church from Boise State's College of Business and Economics concludes that 2011 conventions and local events at the Boise Centre generated $27.5 million in increased sales of goods and services in the Treasure Valley and sustained the equivalent of 314 full-time jobs (including directly affected operations personnel and indirectly affected workers at hotels and restaurants).
The study, which tracked 29 conventions and 175 local events, saw an average daily attendance of 410 individuals, with 82 percent of the attendees coming from the local community.
The study estimates that the Centre increased state tax revenues in 2011 by more than $1 million, including sales taxes, motor vehicle taxes and corporate taxes. The survey estimates that an average local attendee would spend $81 per day, compared to non-local attendees spending $251 and their guests spending an additional $162.
But at least one GBAD board member isn't thrilled with the Boise Centre's progress in booking new conventions and events. At its July 23 meeting, board member Rob Perez criticized the Boise Centre team for "only approaching 54 percent of its projected plan."
Cliff Clinger, Boise Centre director of marketing and sales, told the board that, to date, his team had booked 14 conventions into the facility for 2013, with nine more booked through the Boise Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The original plan had estimated that 2012 conventions would bring in a total of 48,000 bed nights to Boise-area hotels, but in reality, only 7,000 nights had been booked to date.
