83 Million Facebook 'Friends' Are Fake


In its latest filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Facebook is acknowledging that nearly 83 million of its "friends" are fake, representing 8.7 percent of Facebook's 955 million monthly active users.

Facebook estimates that 4.8 percent of the bad accounts were duplicates, another 2.4 percent were misclassified, and an additional 1.5 percent were spam accounts.

As a result, Facebook adjusted the number of its users down to 872 million. It its latest census, Twitter claimed to have just over 500 million users, including some spam accounts.
