Treasure Valley Unemployment Rate Drops Half Percent


Idaho's official unemployment rolls dropped below 60,000 in June, the lowest number in nearly three years.

While the Gem State's jobless rate dropped to 7.7 percent, the number of employed Idahoans ticked up by only 500 people between May and June, well below the the year's average monthly increase of 2,200. In all, the Idaho Department of Labor reported that the number of unemployed fell 700 in June, down to 50,900, the lowest rate since August 2009. At this point last year, Idaho's unemployment rate was 8.8 percent, representing more than 700,000 Idahoans without work.

The Treasure Valley registered a 7.5 percent unemployment rate in June, a half-percent lower than May and a full 1.7 percent lower than June 2011.

Idaho's lowest unemployment rate in June was in Franklin County, reporting a 4.2 percent jobless rate. Adams County registered a 16.2 percent jobless rate, the highest in the state.
