The National Weather Service Office in Boise has posted a fire weather watch for Southern Idaho. Scattered thunderstorms with what is being called "abundant" lightning are possible for the Owyhee Mountains and Shoshone Bureau of Land Management District on Friday afternoon. Unstable weather combined with tens of thousands of acres of dry fuels has the region's firefighters on alert.
In Eastern Idaho, a red flag warning is in effect for today as thunderstorms are expected to sweep into the region from Western Colorado and Central Utah. A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either under way or will occur shortly. A combination of strong winds, low humidity and high temperatures result in what the weather service calls "explosive fire growth potential."
