Star News: McCall School Officials Opt to Keep Class Rankings

Following a month-long consideration of eliminating its valedictorian and salutatorian honors for high-school graduates, the McCall-Donnelly School District Board of Trustees is now urging a study committee to keep things the way it has been done for decades, saluting top students.

This morning's McCall Star News reports that board members said they heard enough from teachers, parents and students to confirm that they still wanted valedictorians and salutatorians. But they also asked a study committee to find new ways of determining graduation speakers, other than simply using class rank.

Trustees said that the current system was "not perfect," rewarding top achieving students who take the most rigorous classes, but also rewarding students who take a number of pass/fail courses and not having the credits factored into grade-point averages.
