Murderer, Who Had Escaped to Idaho, Commits Suicide in Jail Cell

A notorious murderer, who once escaped from prison and lived under an alias in Boise, took his own life this week in his Pennsylvania prison cell. Pennsylvania officials said 74-year-old Jon Yount killed himself just days before the 46-year anniversary of the brutal rape and murder of a high-school girl. Yount, a former math teacher, confessed to the murder.

In 1986, Yount walked away from an unsupervised farm detail at a Pennsylvania prison, and fled to Idaho, where he lived with a pen pal-turned-girlfriend, under assumed names. Shortly after their story was broadcast on the NBC television show, Unsolved Mysteries, Yount was was identified and captured.

According to WJAC-TV in Johnston, Penn., Yount outlived the judge, prosecutors and lead investigators in his case before taking his own life.
