Arizona Bans Abortions After 20 Weeks, Requires Ultrasound

Following a debate familiar to many Idahoans, the governor of Arizona has singed into law a controversial bill that bans most abortions after 20 weeks and requires an ultrasound hours before any abortion.

Arizona has now joined six other states that have put similar late-term abortion bans in place in the past two years. Georgia approved a similar bill in March and is expected to be signed into law by its Republican governor.

"To call this an extreme assault on reproductive rights would be a massive understatement," said Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights. "In its cruelty and its callous disregard for women's lives; it is downright appalling."

Arizona officials are now also required to create a website that details the risks of an abortion procedure and shows pictures of the fetus in various stages.
