Jobless Claims Drop; Optimists Look Toward Friday's Job Numbers

The number of Americans applying for new jobless benefits last week dropped to its lowest level since prior to the Barack Obama administration. The U.S. Labor Department reported this morning that initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 357,000, the lowest level since April 2008.

Meanwhile, analysts are eagerly anticipating the Friday, April 6, report of the March employment statistics. Economists polled by Reuters said the job report should show the U.S. economy added more than 200,000 positions last month, which could notch a fourth-consecutive month of solid job gains.
