Grisly images of dead wolves being posted on social media have fanned the flames of an already hot debate over the fate of wolves in Idaho and the Intermountain West.
One Facebook user, identified as Shane Miller, posted an image of two wolves strangled to death by cable snares and wrote, "Very nice! Don't stop now, you're just getting started!"
Another Facebooker, identified as Matthew Brown, posted an image of a single wolf choked to death in a snare and wrote, "Nice, one down and a bunch to go!"
Reuters reports that the pictures and commentary "have intensified online arguments over the ethics of hunting and trapping wolves. The debate took a threatening turn this week with an anonymous email warning that animal-rights advocates will be the target next."
Since endangered species protections were removed last May, Idaho has cut its wolf population by about 40 percent from approximately 1,000 to 600 or fewer.
