Report: 67 Million Pounds of Toxic Chemicals Released in Idaho in 2010


According to a new report released today, toxic chemical releases increased by 17 percent in Idaho during 2010.

The Toxics Release Inventory National Analysis showed chemical releases grew throughout Environmental Protection Agency Region 10: 20-percent increases in both Alaska and Oregon, and a 27-percent increase in Washington.

In Idaho, according to the report, 95 facilities reported a total of 67 million pounds of toxic chemical releases in 2010. Among the top Idaho facilities cited were the Lucky Friday Silver Mine in Mullan, a JR Simplot operation in Pocatello and McCain Foods in Burley.

In Idaho, metal mining contributed nearly 43 percent of all releases, according to the report.
