INL Reports New Sodium Fire

by

Three days following an accident at the Idaho National Laboratory, where 17 employees were exposed to radiation, the eastern Idaho facility is reporting a sodium fire at its Materials and Fuels Complex.

The INL's Emergency Operations Center has been activated and all employees at the site, which is owned and operated by the Idaho Cleanup Project, have been relocated a safe distance away from the fire.

The Idaho Cleanup Project is a seven-year, $2.9 billion effort that treats millions of gallons of sodium-bearing waste and demolishes more than 200 structures, including reactors, spent nuclear fuel storage basins and labs used for radioactive experiments.
