More Idaho children are living in the shadow of poverty, according to the latest Kids Count report.
The analysis from the Annie E. Casey Foundation counted 41,000 Idaho children with at least one unemployed parent in 2010, and 28,000 children affected by foreclosure since 2007. Nationwide Idaho was ranked 22nd when measuring the well-being of children, an improvement from 2000 when the Gem State was ranked 25th.
Some of the more sobering statistics:
- 29 percent more children were living in poverty
- 22 percent increase in the teen death rate (ages 15-19)
But there was good news:
- 40 percent more teens were staying in school
- 5 percent fewer teens were giving birth (ages 15-19)
