USDA Wants Consumers to Know What's In Their Meat


The U.S. government wants consumers to know what's inside their meat purchases ... other than meat. A proposed rule from the United States Department of Agriculture would require that poultry and most raw meats include all of their additives, like chicken broth, teriyaki, salt and water, on their labels. The additives may be common, but many consumers aren't aware of them.

According to the USDA, about one-third of poultry, 15 percent of beef and 90 percent of pork may have added ingredients.

The American Meat Institute called the rule "wasteful" and "unnecessary," saying it would cause an increase in prices.
