We're about as far away from flurries as the calendar allow, but a group in Sun Valley has begun the formal process to create an official Olympic and Paralympic Nordic training center in the Wood River Valley.
Diana Takvam, spokesman for the Sun Valley Economic Development Corp., told Citydesk that the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, Blaine County Recreation and Wood River Ability Sports are championing the effort along with the EDC. The group is taking the lead in crafting a three-year business plan. The operating budget will be the centerpiece of an official application to the U.S. Olympic Committee.
"It's quite early," said Takvam. "We're still looking to attract volunteers for a working group and steering committee to help us through this process."
Takvam said the application could go the USOC as early as April 2011.
There are more than 200 km of Nordic trails in and around Sun Valley, considered one of the largest trail systems in the U.S.
Takvam says the USOC and Paralympic national governing bodies have indicated a strong desire to designate another certified training center and have encouraged a Sun Valley area application.
