Sorrento Cheese will be paying the U.S. Justice Department $315,000. The Canyon County cheese manufacturer was accused of violating the Clean Water Act.

The DOJ said Sorrento exceeded daily and monthly discharge limits for total suspended solids, E. coli and phosphorous. They were also accused of failing to notify the Environmental Protection Agency of its excess discharges in a timely manner.

Justice officials said Sorrento discharged the pollutants into Mason Creek, which flows into the Boise River.

According to its permit, Sorrento discharges approximately 650,000 gallons of "processed" wastewater per day.
