Viva Voce: Get yr Blood sucked out

When Planets Collide MP3

It's election night, one week after Halloween and I still have a sweet tooth. It's a good thing I was handed this album for review. On their third full-length album, Get Yr Blood Sucked Out, Portland, Oregon duo Viva Voce professes, "We Do Not Fuck Around," the seventh track on the CD. If there is one statement to describe the new album, it is this. Songs in this collection represent the band's devotion to crafting seriously thick music. Anita Robinson's vocals have a beautiful, sometimes barely audible ghost-like quality in contrast to her sharp wandering guitar work. Kevin Robinson's vocals and beats seem to give in to pop proven formulas, and the two of them balance the bitter and the sweet. This album is not a sugarcoated statement, but rather is more like maple syrup, with its dark moods and sometimes slow moving song structures. Get Yr Blood is nostalgic in a carefully nuanced way that doesn't just reach back in time for inspiration, but seems to continue a conversation long forgotten. With few lyrics, addressing many modern issues, without art-less preaching, Get Yr Blood leads to the edge of some kind of darkness and leaves the listener wondering what's inside. The album remains mysterious, and even if you think you've heard it before from Viva Voce, songs twist and turn, revealing only glimpses into the psyche of the band. I imagine that stopping at their place on Halloween one would receive good old-fashioned hard candy. Mmm ... candy.
