Invaders from the Deep

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is holding open house meetings to discuss the Aquatic Nuisance Species plan for Idaho released by the governor's Idaho Invasive Species Council.

The nuisances in question include the Eurasian watermilfoil, a plant that crowds out native plant species; the invasive zebra mussel, another European transplant; and the silver carp, which can grow to nearly 50 pounds and "jump" out of the water into a moving boat. That's like five gallons of milk leaping into your skiff without notice. The IDFG hopes the plan will "provide direction and coordination for state and federal agencies and other interested groups in the prevention, eradication or management of aquatic nuisance species in Idaho."

July 23, 3 p.m., 600 S. Walnut St. The draft is available for review at http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/cms/public.
