There's an event on the horizon that promises to be as informative as it is entertaining. The Visual Arts Collective hosts the inaugural Boise Experimental Music Festival (BEMF). The brainchild of local experimental musician Krispen Hartung, the BEMF found support from a number of local sponsors (including this fine paper), and even received funding in the form of a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Idaho Commission on the Arts, taking it beyond the realm of music for music's sake and into the world of high art.
The multi-media festival includes a plethora of visual and performance art and an amazing array of musicians from all over the world whose experimental, avant-garde and free improvisational sound will give this type of music a new presence in the Treasure Valley. This two day event intersperses experimental films and graphic art videos among the musical performances. Friday night's events kick-off at 7 p.m. with a welcome and introduction by festival coordinators Krispen Hartung and the VaC'sAnneliessa Balk Stimpert, and performances by Art Hodge, Lumper/Splitter, Ted Killian and Jeff Kaiser, and Rick Walker. Saturday's events begin at noon with a pre-performance social hour featuring experimental videos. Then, She Blows Neon plays at 1 p.m., The Rex-X-Ray Band at 1:45, LINDA at 2:30, Art Hodge at 3:15, Unicorn Feather at 4, Jeff Rice and Ted Apel at 4:45, Krispen Hartung and Jared Hallock at 5:30, Ted Killian and Jeff Kaiser in combination with Rick Walker at 7, Lumper/Splitter at 8:15, and Bonefish Sam and His Power Orchestra at 9.
With Hartung at the helm, this promises to be one of the best organized, well-run events with an incredible arrangement of sights and sounds. Go for one performance or go for them all, but either way, you'll be able to say you were at the first of what's sure to become a highly anticipated festival year after year.
