Don Heffner of Volcanic Farms Produce rested on an empty cooler as a light rain pelted his tent. The Horseshoe Bend farmer had completely sold out of produce by 10:30 a.m. April 6—opening day of the new Boise Farmers Market.
“I brought eggs and asparagus—I’d say 100 pounds of asparagus,” he said.
The split between the Capital City Public Market and the Boise Farmers Market hasn’t been without conflict. As Boise Weekly reported April 3, BFM vendors found out late in the game that they would need to secure individual vending permits because the market is on private parking lot at 11th and Front streets. Vendors at the CCPM are covered under a Special Events Permit since the market is on public property.
But permits seemed to be of less concern than sales April 6. According to Janie Burns, BFM acting president and owner of Meadowlark Farm, a number of vendors had to restock their goods soon after the market opened.
“Guru Donuts, they’re on their second resupply; Homestead meats has been resupplied. [Riverview Gardens] were out of vegetables in an hour and five minutes,” said Burns. “For the meat vendors, I’d say it’s about an average or above average day, but for the produce people, it’s been slammin’.”
Neither the scarcity of produce nor the chilly rain, which had mothers shielding swaddled babies while they waited near the Funky Taco stand, seemed to deter crowds eager to kick off spring at the new Boise Farmers Market.
“As someone who’s looking forward to my pasture being greener, I welcome the rain,” said Burns with a smile.
