On Friday April 5, the Boise EDM community will embark on a five-week competitive journey exploring some well-known and unknown local DJs. During Boise’s Best EDM DJ competition, DJs will be evaluated by unbiased judges on track selection, transitions, mixing ability and how they read the crowd.

“Because of this influx of big talent that has been coming to the Valley, I think a lot of people lose sight of the fact that Boise has a huge talent pool of DJ's and artists that have been in this town for years and years—some decades,” said Brandon Lee, owner of Cityskape Productions, which is organizing the competition.

Boise Weekly caught up with some of the competitors.

Polish transplant, Manic, aka Tom Midak, will compete Friday, April 12, showing off his break beats, drum and bass, and dubstep tunes. Midak hopes to provide fans with the same experience that hooked him in 1996 when he attended his first rave.

“I was invited to my first rave and I fell in love with not only the people, but also the music. I finally felt at home, I never had the need to worry about anyone judging me for who I was or where I was from,” said Midak.

Born in San Sebastian, Spain, DJ Koitz, aka Garikoitz Aristizabal, will compete Friday, May 3. Koitz stared his music career at the age of eight as a cello player, before turning to DJing at age 15. Koitz sticks to his European trance and house roots by playing animated, progressive house beats.

“The feeling you get when you are up there in front of a crowd watching everyone dance and have a great time is why I love this so much. You have to interact with your crowd,” said Koitz.

Boise’s Anihilus, aka Keegan Stark, will also perform Friday, May 3. With a strong fan base, Stark was voted in at one of the top DJ spots. Fans can expect his broken-beat, bass-heavy sound to tell a story.

“My music is a force of natural progression in the EDM world. If you like heartfelt, passionate, emotionally charged, melodic, modern day EDM, I represent it in its finest form of evolution,” said Stark.
