Looking to get out of the house tonight, but don't have the stomach for the First Thursday crowds? Boise Weekly's Thursday night alternative to downtown's hustle and bustle is The Hobbit, which is playing at the Boise State University Special Events Center.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is, depending on one's point of view, either the lighthearted prelude to author J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy or the meat and potatoes of his oeuvre. Either way, as a novel, it's a sublimely told tale, and as a film, it's easy to watch with a cast of well-known actors including Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Cate Blanchett.

Bilbo Baggins (Freeman) is a hobbit living easy in the Shire until Gandalf the wizard (McKellen) arrives on his doorstep and entices him into adventure with a pack of rowdy dwarves to reclaim untold riches from Smaug the dragon, who was displaced the dwarves years ago and now lives in a mountain atop a pile of pilfered treasure.

The film, presented as part of the Thursday Blockbuster series at BSU, begins at 7 p.m. Admission for BSU students is free, but for the public it's $1.
