  • Darian Renee's EP, Only the Beginning, dropped Dec. 1.

Local pop singer and former booker for The Venue Darian Renee dropped her new EP, Only the Beginning, today.

The four-song EP is available for download at Bandcamp, and in hard copy at "select retailers." Renee is reportedly working on gaining wider distribution and a spring tour to promote the release, but has yet to lock anything down.

Largely produced and orchestrated by Boise musician Steven Palin, who performs as Bridgeport (Full disclosure: I occasionally play drums with Bridgeport), the release marks the most ambitious solo project for the singer since she left her group, Salt the Seas. The EP features a selection of bouncy, Taylor Swift-esque pop ballads about young love that are far more developed than her earlier work.

The tracks lean more on Renee's vocal stylings than flashy instrumental elements, using simple drums, piano and guitar to form a foundation for layered harmonies. The EP's third song, "Hung Up," is the standout track, with a high-end arpeggio taking over rhythm duties from drums. But nearly any song on the EP could be a pop radio single.

The full EP can be downloaded at Bandcamp, or streamed below.
