Silver Linings Playbook Racks Up Top Indy Spirit Award Noms

Oscar gold grabs much of Hollywood's limelight, but the Independent Spirit Awards—traditionally given out the afternoon before the Academy Awards—carry some serious cred in the film industry.

The 28th annual Film Independent Spirit Award nominees were unveiled today and provide the season's first real indicators of who could grab one of Oscar's coveted nominations. In particular, Silver Linings Playbook snagged nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress.

Big-budget films such as Argo, Lincoln, The Hobbit and Les Miserables aren't eligible for Independent Spirit Awards but are each expected to be serious contenders when the Golden Globes and Oscars are distributed.

The next big round of announcements will come Wednesday, Dec. 12, when the Golden Globe nominations are unveiled, and Oscar nominations will be made public on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013.
