The Silly Birch Set to Open in Former Mac and Charlie's Space

For the last few months, the windows have been covered up in the space formerly occupied by Mac & Charlies at 507 Main St. Apart from the rumblings of a construction crew, it has remained a mostly confidential remodel. So what's going on in there?

The owners of Mac and Charlie's, Tom Grainey's, Sammy's Bar and The Lift are building a new bar: The Silly Birch. The space is slated to open on Friday, Aug. 31, with a whole new look and feel—clean, vibrant, upscale finishes, a few new walls and a brand new bar orientation.

Boise Weekly toured the still-under-construction space with general manager Cody Proctor to get the lowdown on what they have been up to. According to Proctor, the scene at The Silly Birch is meant to be "a little bit more of how Old Boise was. Fun for all ages—like the young professional crowd—to be able to come down and have a drink and not worry about a bar that is too packed or a crowd that just wants to party."

As for the intended clientele, Proctor said they are looking to create a more chill vibe and attract some of the people who may avoid the typical of Sixth and Main revelry. Young professionals, after-dinner drinkers and folks looking to cut loose will all find something at The Silly Birch.

"It's a great sports bar feel in the afternoon, and it will go to a bar bar at 9 o' clock." said Proctor.

Future plans include a complete renovation of Sammy's next door, which will become Brush Fire—a lounge-style bar with a rooftop patio that is slated to open in March of 2013.

"We're going to stay away from 25 cent beers," Proctor said. "It's going to be a bar where people don't mind paying $4 for a beer."

Fourteen local microbrews, pool tables, a foosball table, seasonal garage doors, TV's, a projector screen for big games and a Golden Tee arcade game will round out the bar's offerings.
