GQ correspondent Brett Martin is a big Boise fan.

“I had come to Boise because I heard you could get a great cocktail here,” Martin wrote in a feature for GQ’s July 2012 America issue.

Martin was searching for the best food in the country in the unlikeliest places and Boise’s Red Feather Lounge and The Modern Hotel and Bar both made his short list.

“Coasts and big cities long ago gave up their monopoly on good food scenes,” wrote Martin. “I saw that while eating roasted carrots painted with honey at the Red Feather Lounge in Boise, Idaho.”

Martin’s pilgrimage to Boise began with rumors of great cocktails, and ended with an appreciation for the food and the culture that make the Treasure Valley stand out. Faced with “drink menus that could double as reference works,” Martin delved into the history of The Modern’s sophisticated take on food and drink in its unconventional, former Travelodge setting.

Martin closed his remarks with a nod to Boise’s good food and good people.

“I remember eating some ethereal gnocchi from The Modern’s kitchen,” he wrote. “I remember discussing organic gardening at a table containing an MFA student, a philosophy professor, a farmer and a belly dancer. And I remember finally plummeting into bed with a final thought that I felt reasonably confident had never been thought before: that I’d had such a good time in Boise, I’d have nothing left for Las Vegas.”

The July issue of GQ will be available on newsstands on Tuesday, June 26.
