The Linen Building was filled to the brim with bottles and bodies on the evening of Nov. 17, when the Idaho Wine Commission put on its Sippin' in the City event. Twelve Idaho wineries brought in a variety of bottles for attendees to sample, and representatives from each shuffled through the packed house to fill empty glasses. The crowd included everyone from 20-somethings still in their business clothes to a man in a blue leisure suit to those in their golden years.
"Everyone's here, and it's great," said Idaho Wine Commission Executive Director Moya Shatz.
According to Shatz, Idaho's wine industry has grown significantly in the three years she's been in Boise, growing from 32 wineries in 2008 to the current 48. Sippin' in the City was created to educate people about Idaho's vast wine industry. The event featured educational stations on aromas frequently found in wine, info about recycling wine corks and general statistics about Idaho's wine industry.
Shatz said the goal of the event was, "To get all these people to say, 'Wow, I love Idaho wine,' and go out to wine country."
A buffet of locally-sourced appetizers created a long, winding line, and caterers danced around attendees holding platters of snacks as well.
Shatz wanted attendees to realize how Idaho wines have evolved from their earlier counterparts.
"We're in a whole different world now. It's amazing. The wineries have been honing their skills, they're learning," said Shatz. "There's a whole new generation of winemakers."
Boise's enthusiasm for wine was evidenced by the event's sold-out status and the crowded conditions, which makes the possibility of a repeat event pretty good.
Shatz took a look around the packed Linen Building, smiled and said, "I'm already thinking about next year."
