Owyhee County Outpost Days

In Owyhee County, the start of summer is celebrated with Outpost Days, a weekend-long celebration of the history and culture of the area.

Things kick off on Friday, June 3, with cowboy poet Art Honey, and lead up to what might well be the only race of its kind in the country: the Horned Toad Race. Kids have the chance to race horned toads they have caught in the desert in an effort to take the title. The lizard race is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 5.

Each day's events kick off with an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8-10 a.m., followed by a longhorn cattle drive down Murphy's Main Street, living history displays, vendors, live music, food, car clubs and tours of the Owyhee County Historical Society Museum.

Artisans will be showing off skills in trades like smithing, spinning and saddle making, some of which will be for sale. Some handmade items will go on the auction block as part of a popular live auction beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
