In 1960, the Modern Hotel was a Travelodge—a low-budget stop for weary wayfarers passing through. Now, thanks to the imagination and hard work of a few dedicated folks and a restoration to revive the era’s sleek look, that mid-century building is a hipster’s haven where the cool kids go to sip a cocktail or two on the patio. It’s also where Boise’s Mod Squad is having its launch party tonight.
The group, which is part of Preservation Idaho, formed last year in order to help promote the appreciation of buildings in town with a modern architectural design—especially those built between 1950 and 1970. Members of the group have been busy preparing and planning tours, exhibits and more in an effort to educate the community about the importance of protecting Idaho’s architectural gems.
Tonight is your opportunity to learn more about the group and the work they’re doing, and to don those tortoise-shell glasses and vintage dress you adore. You can join Preservation Idaho and make some memories in the retro photo booth they’ll have set up, too. The party starts at 6 p.m. and is FREE to attend.
