TIFF: Conviction: A Enthusiastic Verdict

I met an amazing woman on Sept. 11. She’s my new heroine. Her name is Betty Anne Walters.

It was a rather odd setting: at 3 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, Hilary Swank was dressed in a knock-dead gorgeous sequined dress at the world premiere of her latest movie.

Swank portrays Walters in the soon-to-be-released feature, Conviction. The story is almost impossible to believe. Walters, a blue collar mother of two is the sister of a man (played by Sam Rockwell) convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Walters spends the rest of her adult years trying to prove his innocence.

As I rubber-necked the red carpet for a glimpse of Swank, I noticed Walters (I had seen her picture previously) and said, “Hi, Ms. Walters.” She was taken aback that I even knew who she was.

“This is surreal,” she smiled.

In October, you’ll get the chance to get to know Betty Ann Walters, too. She may become your new heroine as well.
