Foie gras is legendary. A person will normally love it, hate it or have no idea what foie is. It can be both cruel and delicious. But what it is often escapes people. Foie is just a fat goose liver, that is all. The problem that most have with foie is the way that the goose liver gets fat. More often than not, geese are force fed a mash that is pumped into their stomachs via an auger and pipe. This mash causes their livers to swell and become exceptionally fatty and scrumptious.
The anti foie gras argument is simple:Force feeding animals is cruel. Shoving mash down a goose's gullet until its liver swells, is an act of cruelty. The PETA folks are speaking the truth about that.
My counter argument is equally as simple: So what?. We are cruel to animals every single day. We don’t torture other animals? Oh, yes we do. Pen animals and remove their genitals? Oh, that is what we do to cows, sheep, dogs, cats, rabbits and many others. Use hot iron brands so we can identify who owns what animals? Yeah, we do that too. Suck out large amounts of body fluid? Mmm … milk. If you can’t stand the thought of eating an animal that has been tortured than I suggest you stop eating animals.
Don’t get me wrong, I want my food treated well before it dies. It has been proven that it tastes better and I will sleep better at night knowing that some cow was not tortured. However, I am willing to send a cow to its death for a steak. I am willing to kill a chicken to get my barbecue. I am willing to stuff a goose to get my foie gras.
