My route for this year’s coldest-beer-testing mission took me into downtown Meridian and a cozy, basement wine bar Corkscrews Wine Shop.
While Corkscrews carries an international selection of 35 beers—including Old Speckled Hen from England and Smithwick’s Imported Irish Ale—stored in a lighted glass refrigerator, they do not offer brew on tap.
Eager to continue my beer-testing mission, I did not take the time to stop and smell the rose or sample any snacks, yet I thought the subterranean hideout looked like a place where beer snobs and wine aficionados could co-sip and nibble in harmony. Snack offerings like smoked trout, spiced black olives or a variety of cheeses cost ten bucks and under.
In addition to the glowing beer fridge, the decor consists of a wall’s worth of racks that display a portion of the wine shop's nearly 350 different vintages. Murals that depict rolling Italian hillsides dotted with villas and slender cypress trees help form what feels like a secret meeting place tucked underneath the heart of Meridian’s busy downtown sector.
