Meridian cops said today they arrested Erika Hanson, 43, on charges of vehicular manslaughter, for her role in the death of cyclist Sarah Howard.
Hanson was at the wheel of a Hummer when she ran into Howard
while she waited on her bike, in a bike lane, at an intersection in Boise.
The police now say Hanson had prescription drugs in her system at the time of the accident, and a search warrant turned up illegal drugs in her house.
Hanson was taken into custody Monday night, according to Meridian Police Department Spokesman Lt. Bob Stowe.
Hanson was booked on charges of vehicular manslaughter, Stowe said. She is in the Ada County jail pending a $500,000 bond.
Stowe said the arrest was made after his agency and the Ada County Prosecutor's office received results of a toxicology test taken on Hanson at the time.
"There was enough in her system that we believe would cause impairment," Stowe said.
After getting a search warrant and going through Hanson's home, Stowe said, officers found prescription drugs, some marijuana, and some drug paraphernalia.
"There were some prescription drugs and some of those were European, not common in America," Stowe said.
Hanson, a native of Germany, is married to an American citizen, Stowe said.
