Some big names in the Idaho Legislature went down to defeat in Tuesday's GOP primary.

Coeur d'Alene Sen. John Goedde, chairman of the powerful Senate Education Committee, lost his Republican primary to challenger to Mary Souza, and since no Democrat has filed to run for the seat, Souza will only face opposition from Constitution Party candidate Ray Writz come November. Goedde lost by nearly 300 votes.

In a real stunner, Statehouse veteran Sen. Monty Pearce of New Plymouth, chairman of the Senate Resources and Environment Committee, lost his GOP race to challenger Abby Lee by more than 1,000 votes.

In the Idaho House, a number of Republican veterans also went down to defeat.

One of the biggest upsets of the night was Challis Rep. Lenore Barrett, chair of the House Local Government Committee, losing to challenger Merrill Beyeler by nearly 1,000 votes.

Hayden Rep. Ed Morse also lost big to challenger Eric Redman by more than 1,000 votes.

Dover Rep. George Eskridge lost to challenger Sage Dixon by nearly 450 votes.

And Rexburg Rep. Doug Hancey lost to challenger Ronald Nate by nearly 500 votes.
