Firefighting crews have primarily been using sky crane helicopters to battle the Papoose Fire along the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.

The Papoose Fire was started by lightning July 8, about 40 miles west of Salmon. The blaze is burning grass, brush and timber in extremely steep, rugged and often inaccessible terrain above the Middle Fork.

Fire managers say they're working with river outfitters in the region to assess campsites that may be at risk. Meanwhile, rafters are being told that they may need to share reserved camping spaces with firefighters due to the situation. Boaters on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River are being asked to checking in with forest personnel to confirm their campsites are open.
