Mountain Express: Hailey Park 'Out of Commission'

"Design flaws" are being blamed for the shutdown of a park—only four years old—in Hailey.

This morning's Idaho Mountain Express reports that city of Hailey officials are considering raising parks fees to help maintain the 9-acre Keefer Park, which includes basketball courts, a soccer field, baseball field, picnic pavilion and a trailhead to the popular Toe of the Hill Trail.

But it turns out that a 10-inch layer of sand is just below the turf on the soccer field and irrigation problems have already resulted in Keefer Park's soccer field looking much older than something that opened in 2008.

As a result, the soccer field has been closed while landscape crews dethatch the turf.

Meanwhile the Hailey City Council is mulling the possibility of increasing user fees in order to cover all ongoing maintenance costs.
