In March, National Journal—a weekly political magazine aimed at Washington insiders—reported that Idaho Republican U.S. Sen. Jim Risch was "comfortably ahead" and "appears unlikely to face a significant challenge in deep-red Idaho" for a 2014 re-election bid.
Not wanting to take anything to chance, Risch announced Thursday that he was already launching his bid to retain his seat.
"I will run for re-election in 2014," said Risch. "Idahoans are opposed to the ever-growing role of the federal government in their lives, and my votes in the Senate have reflected that sentiment."
Anyone wanting to challenge Risch will need to remember that he is the 16th richest member of Congress, according to an August 2012 list published by Roll Call. According to Roll Call, Risch's assets totaled $20.1 million, with $320,000 in liabilities. No other Idaho congressman made the Top 50 list.
