A former Idaho County sheriff's deputy was sentenced to six years' probation Tuesday after admitting to a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl.
This morning's Lewiston Tribune reports that 31-year-old Daniel Funderburg pleaded guilty to felony lewd and lascivious acts with a minor child 16 to 17 years of age.
In December, we first told you about Funderburg, who was placed on administrative leave after being charged with lewd and lascivious contact. Prosecutors alleged that Funderburg had sex with the underage girl at his house, and that the girl had contracted a sexually transmitted disease as a result of the encounters.
On Tuesday, District Judge John Stegner sentenced Funderburg to six years in prison, but suspended the sentence in favor of probation. Funderburg must also register as a sex offender.
Meanwhile, prosecutors are also deciding whether to file criminal charges against Idaho County Undersheriff Jim Gorges, who allegedly tried to get the mother of the victim in the case to drop the charges.
At his Tuesday sentencing, Funderburg cried while he apologized to his victim, her family and his family. The Tribune reports that he also apologized to the Idaho National Guard and the Idaho County Sheriff's Office.
"I hope they can forgive me," Funderburg told the courtroom, according to the Tribune.
Stegner said Funderburg's actions were "illegal, immoral and improper."
