In Idaho, spending on roads is controlled by highway districts, which collect revenue and initiate projects to help motorists move about the area.
Here in the Treasure Valley, the Ada County Highway District manages everything curb-to-curb in the county, in towns and its largest city, Boise. This morning, ACHD released data on $814 million in spending since 2001, broken down by jurisdiction, which shows how its revenue was allocated.
Included graphs showed Boise received $341.2 million in spending on road projects during that 11-year span, to comprise 42 percent of spending, while fast-growing cities in western Ada County received a larger share. According to a release included with the study, that's about to change.
"Boise, which has slightly more than half of the county’s population, stands to get $6 of every $10 ACHD expects to spend on construction through 2020, the study shows," wrote ACHD in the release.
The City of Boise will receive the "lion's share" of spending to address long-standing needs, according to Sara Baker, president of the ACHD Commission. Part of that effort is the 30th Street Extension, soon to become Whitewater Park Boulevard in Boise's West End neighborhood, which broke ground on Jan. 30.
ACHD is also working on a Downtown Boise Implementation Plan, which the organization is seeking public comment on at a Feb. 13 open house, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the US Bank Building, second floor, 101 S. Capital Blvd.
That plan includes proposals to perform surface maintenance work, improvements to bicycle and pedestrian use, streetscape improvements and conversion of some streets from one-way to two-way traffic.
