The Idaho Transportation Department traditionally gives citizens ample time to exercise caution when a mega-load rolls along a Gem State highway.
But the Lewiston Tribune reports that the ITD waited until after business hours on Jan. 3 to report that an oversized load would roll across north-central Idaho's U.S. Highway 12 that same night. The Tribune reports that the rig, weighing close to 250,000 pounds, 163 feet long and 16-1/2 feet tall crawled from an ITD weigh station east of Lewiston to the Montana border in a single night. The ITD would not disclose the mega-load's ultimate destination.
The Tribune reports that one or two more mega-loads might be traversing U.S. Highway 12 later this month, but an ITD spokesman wouldn't confirm the plans.
