Santa's Big Scene: Millions of Christmas Travelers Hit the Airways, Roadways

Arrivals and departures were all on schedule this morning at the Boise Airport, as the mad crush of Christmas travelers reaches its zenith today.

Ådditionally, AAA is predicting that more than 93 million Americans are hitting the road this week and next—1.6 percent more than 2011 and about 400,000 shy of the 2006 record. One in four Americans will be driving at least 50 miles from now until Jan. 1.

Nationwide, the average price for a gallon of unleaded gas is about $3.24 a gallon, a 50 cent drop since September.

In Idaho, the average price for a gallon of unleaded is $3.07. Statewide, the cheapest gas was reported to be in Lewiston: approximately $2.84 a gallon at several stations. Some of the highest prices were reported at service stations in south Boise and Eagle: $3.29 per gallon.

The weather forecast for the Boise metro area calls for mostly cloudy skies this evening, with a low near 22 degrees, and mostly cloudy skies again for Christmas Day, with a high near 35.

The National Weather Service office in Boise has issued a winter weather advisory for snow in the western half of the southwest Idaho highlands through Tuesday night. A winter storm watch is also in effect for much of eastern Idaho through Tuesday. A winter weather advisory is also in effect until 11 this evening for the Southern Clearwater, Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains.
