Sun Valley Audit Alleges Credit Card Abuse and Bad Management, But No Criminal Charges

Sun Valley citizens are beginning to get their first glimpse of what's inside a much anticipated forensic report triggered by a string of bad behavior by Sun Valley city employees.

This morning's Idaho Mountain Express lists some of the findings, including misuse of city credit cards, little-to-no documentation for personal leave, and at least one employee being paid for more hours than he actually worked.

But the real stunner is that Blaine County Prosecuting Attorney Jim Thomas has formally notified the Sun Valley City Council that he will not be filing criminal charges against any city employees regarding the findings. Thomas said there was "insufficient evidence due to sloppy record keeping and permission by city officials to engage in questionable activities as barriers to prosecution," according to the Mountain Express.

The audit was triggered by a string of troubling incidents, including break-ins at the Sun Valley fire station, stolen and/or erased files, resignations by city staff, city employees placed on administrative leave, lawsuits against the city, and countersuits filed by the city.

In August, Sun Valley Mayor Dewayne Briscoe conceded that the audit revealed his city was not in compliance with many federal and state labor laws.
